Drive-by Print-Making Artists Stop at Brockport
Printmakers create unique woodcut-designed tee shirts.
Drive-By Press creates unique tee shirts from woodcuts
Brockport, NY – Two printmakers from Wisconsin have hit the road to bring the centuries-old technique of creating art with woodcut block printing to the people.
Artists Joseph Velasquez and Greg Nanney, the owners of the SlingShot Gallery in Madison, WI, and the inspiration and labor behind “Drive-By Press,” parked their mobile printmaking facility at The College at Brockport, sharing the historic technique, which Nanney refers to as "democratic art." The art form has been used throughout history by the “everyday artist” as a form of satire and political statement.
The artists also spent two days lecturing in art classes, sharing the history and techniques of woodblock and intaglio printmaking followed by an exhibition of original prints.
Students and guests have the opportunity to visit the “art mobile,” which is set up on the mall from 1 to 5 pm today, where they can select their favorite woodcut, ink up the press and make their own tee shirt for a $20 donation.
