The College at Brockport Alumnus Randall Shea Returns from Guatemala October 7

Educator uses student theatre to raise awareness of social issues

Brockport, NY—The College at Brockport, State University of New York welcomes Randall Shea, a 1984 graduate of the College, who will share first-hand accounts of his experience working with families in Guatemala. He will discuss the topic, “Achieving Equality and Sustainable Development through Education in a Guatemalan Village,” 11:30 am to 1 pm on October 7, in Room 119 of the Seymour College Union. The presentation is free and open to the public.

Shea earned both a bachelor of science in business administration, and a bachelor of arts in French from The College at Brockport. He is program coordinator at the Santa María Tzeja Middle School, which has a progressive curriculum with a special emphasis on promoting educational opportunities for female students. Raising awareness regarding sustainable development, and using student theatre groups as a means of addressing relevant social issues, Shea works with the school and the community to bring about change to benefit children, families and the community.

Prior to his current position, Shea was coordinator of the Santa María Tzeja mental health team, facilitating the post-traumatic stress recovery program for Guatemalan civil war survivors. He founded the youth theatre group Teatro 2000 for which he wrote and directed the play, There is Nothing Hidden That Shall not be Made Known, about the history of Santa María Tzejá during the years of violent army repression. Segments of the play appeared in the BBC television series The Terror and the Truth.

Shea also worked for Witness for Peace, 1989-1994, in Nicaragua, Southern Mexico, and Guatemala, and helped coordinate 15 delegations of US citizens that visited these countries. He documented human rights abuses in Nicaragua, worked to educate US citizens about the impact of US policy in Nicaragua, and about the plight of Guatemalan refugees living in Mexico.

For more information about the presentation, contact Andrea Parada, associate professor in the Department of Foreign Languages, at (585) 395-5840 or aparada@brockport.edu.
