Joan Schockow Voted SUNYAC Coach of the Year for the Fourth Time

Press Release Photo Head Coach Joan Schockow

Brockport, NY — When you think of women’s soccer at The College at Brockport, you think of head coach Joan Schockow. With the most wins of all soccer coaches in Brockport’s history (male or female), she has established herself as one of the best and most dedicated coaches in the region. And the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC), recognizing the coaching talent at Brockport, just voted her SUNYAC Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year for the fourth time (previous honors were given in 1989, 1993 and 2006). Schockow, and fellow coaches Fred Parker ’88 and Jen Monfiletto ’97, received the news on November 10.

Schockow started her head coaching career for the College in 1988 and has guided the Golden Eagles to postseason play 14 times, including each of the last 12 consecutive seasons. In her first 20 seasons, 79 players have made the All-SUNYAC squad. November 15 – 16, the team will compete for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) title, having earned the No. 1 seed.

Before coming to The College at Brockport, Schockow was an assistant soccer coach at her alma mater, SUNY Cortland. As a Red Dragon athlete, she established herself as the premier goalie in the nation, earning first-team All-American status in each of her four years while leading her team to the national title in 1980 with a victory over UCLA in the AIAW championship. She was recognized in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd” in 1984 for her accomplishments. On October 25, 2008, Schockow was inducted into the SUNY Cortland C-Club Hall of Fame.

She previously coached the under-14 Olympic Development Team, and has been the head coach for New York West Olympic Development Program. Schockow also coached US Olympian Abby Wambach during the national star’s youth soccer days in the Rochester area.
