Brockport, NY – The world will celebrate a variety of holidays throughout the month of December. With the multitudes of nationalities and religions that populate our planet, each continent seems to have given rise to numerous holiday traditions. Amongst the most popular of these traditions is the music of the season. Carols from Spain and Italy, songs from Africa and gospel spirituals will be on tap when the Brockport College-Community Chorus presents their concert, “Very Merry Music,” on Sunday evening, December 7, 2008, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 14 State Street, Brockport. Tickets for the concert, which begins at 7:30 pm, cost $5, and will be sold at the door.
Amongst the novelties that the chorus will sing is “Skatin’ With My Baby” which was written by no less a national figure than Senator Orrin Hatch. The senator’s musical career includes writing the lyrics to several hymns as well as other, secular music.
“From the halls of the US senate to the Misa del Gallo — Spain’s Christmas Eve ‘Mass of the Rooster’ — and Renaissance Italy, holiday music can be found everywhere. Certainly, some of it is contemplative in nature, and some is just downright fun, but whichever one helps you celebrate the season should be sung with joy!” said Carol Brown, music director of the Chorus.
The concert caps a weekend of holiday merriment throughout the Village of Brockport. For more information about these events, go to www.brockportny.org/html/community/events.
