Brockport, NY – Kenneth P. O'Brien, PhD, director of the Honors Program and a member of the Department of History faculty at The College at Brockport, has been elected President of the State University of New York Faculty Senate for the 2009–2011 term.
O’Brien served as president of The College at Brockport’s College Senate for the 1984–85 and 2002–04 terms. He also served as a University faculty senator for two terms (2004–09) and was a member of the University Faculty Senate Executive Committee (2002–03). He is a past recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1981 and the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service in 2006.
In addition to presiding over the University Senate, O’Brien also will serve as a member of a number of university-wide committees, including the SUNY Board of Trustees.
The University Faculty Senate serves as a resource on governance for the University and serves as a deliberative body on educational policies for the SUNY system.
“I’m excited to have been chosen by my peers to lead the University Faculty Senate. A major focus of our work this year will be to assist Chancellor Nancy Zimpher, especially in the development of a new strategic plan for the SUNY system,” O’Brien said.
According to the SUNY policies of the Board of Trustees, “the Senate shall be the official agency through which the University faculty engages in the governance of the University. The Senate shall be concerned with effective educational policies and other professional matters within the University.”
