On Sunday afternoon (August 30) 1,100+ young people from far-flung areas of New York state, the country, and the world became members of the classes of 2011(transfers) and 2013(freshmen).

They were entertained by the Sankofa African Dance and Drum Ensemble and the Akoma Ntoaso Dance Ensemble..

College president John R Halstead, PhD, welcomed the classes as “the most talented and diverse class in the history of the College” he encouraged each to “discover your own identity, enter the world of inquiry and think about what the future may hold for you and your generation.”

Scott Flieger ’77 ’78, CEO and managing director of Deutsche Bank’s Debt Capital Markets North America division, urged the new students to not “underestimate what you can accomplish here over the next few years. You have the opportunity to get an education that will last you a lifetime. Don’t be afraid to challenge yourselves. Wall Street challenges you every day. I am constantly required to master new information in a short period of time and solve complex problems. I can tell you with absolute conviction that I use the analytical skills I received at Brockport to solve these problems.”

From the student perspective, Lindsay Hansen ’10, an academic double major in English and Women’s Studies, described how the College at Brockport faculty helped her “fall in love with the idea academics and delving in subjects discussed in class.” She also recommended that the new students become involved in the life of the campus, “Get involved as soon as you can. Try different things, explore your options and challenge yourself,” she said. She concluded with the wish that, “you come to love Brockport as much as I do.”
