Brockport, N.Y. – Poet Rodney Jones will be the next guest for The College at Brockport’s Writers Forum. Jones will be giving a public reading at 8 pm, Wednesday, Oct. 7, in the New York Room, Cooper Hall.
Jones grew up on a cotton farm near Falkville, Alabama. He attended the University of Alabama and UNC-Greensboro, where he earned an MFA in 1973.
Among his many books are The Story They Told Us of Light (1980), chosen by Elizabeth Bishop for the Associated Writing Programs Award; The Unborn (1986), winner of the Lavan Award in Poetry from the Academy of American Poets; Transparent Gestures (1990), winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award; Elegy for the Southern Drawl (1999); and Salvation Blues (2006), recipient of the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award.
Jones has won fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation. He lives in Illinois and teaches at the University of Southern Illinois.
Founded in 1967, the Brockport Writers Forum is recognized as one of this country’s outstanding reading series. Its guests have included many distinguished poets, writers and critics. In addition to its program of readings, the Writers Forum sponsors residencies, workshops, symposia and festivals – all dedicated to the art of writing.
