Brockport, NY-It is almost a chicken v. egg quandary: What is the place of a regional theatre within the community it seeks to entertain and challenge, and what sort of impact should that community have on the theatre's everyday functions and productions? At the next installment of the 2009-10 season's"Stage Directions"series, Skip Greer will address these and other related issues in a talk called "Theatre, Mission, and Community." The talk is scheduled for Thursday, December 10, 2009, at 10 am in the Tower Fine Arts Center Mainstage, 180 Holley Street, and is free and open to the public.
In his capacity as director of education at Geva Theatre Center, Greer has implemented and directed all Geva educational programming, including the acting and directing fellowships, and the alliance with The College at Brockport, of which the "Stage Directions" series is a part.
Greer was selected as a "Master Artist" with the California Arts Project from 1990 through 1995 where he developed curricula in the arts for elementary, secondary and university levels. He has been a member of the artistic companies, and programmed the educational outreach initiatives at the Oregon Shakespearean Festival, San Jose Repertory Company, and the Sacramento Theatre Company, amongst others. He has been a teacher and a facilitator at colleges and universities throughout California, Colorado and New York, including The College at Brockport and the University of Rochester.
In addition to his educational responsibilities, Greer is an artist-in-residence at Geva. His directing credits there include American Buffalo, Doubt, Key West, Death of a Salesman, Inherit the Wind, and The House in Hydesville. He has also appeared in productions as varied as Our Town, Hamlet, 1776, Art and Picasso at the Lapin Agile.
Other directing credits include productions at Shakespeare Santa Cruz, Garry Marshall's Falcon Theatre, Studio Arena Theatre, Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, State Theatre of Austin, and Sacramento Theatre Company. He has also appeared on stage with the Oregon Shakespearean Festival, San Jose Repertory Company, Sacramento Theatre Company, Utah Shakespearean Festival, Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts, and the American Conservatory Theatre.
The "Stage Directions" series is sponsored by The College at Brockport's Department of Theatre in conjunction with their educational partnership with Geva Theatre Center. The series gives members of the community insight into the process of professional theatre artists.
