Brockport senior Mary Waterman, of Port Byron, recently received the Jay B. Nash Outstanding Major Award from the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NYSAHPERD). The honor is given annually to the top graduating physical education major in New York.
“It's always great to get recognition, especially on such a big level,” said Waterman. “It kind of validates all that I did.”
After graduation, Waterman plans to pursue a career in teaching.
She will graduate this spring with a bachelor of science degree in PE, with a concentration in adapted PE. She was vice president of the physical education honor society for two years, and is also vice president of the PE major's campus club. She also played midfield on Brockport's field hockey team.
NYSAHPD is a professional organization that supports, encourages, facilitates, advocates and promotes physically active and healthy lifestyles through school and community programs in health education, physical education, recreation and dance.
