Brockport, NY – With a curious, birdseye view of the world and some of its inhabitants, assistant professor Sara DiDonato has curated There’s No Place Like Here. This free exhibition will be at The College at Brockport’s Tower Fine Arts Center Gallery, 180 Holley Street, Brockport, from January 27 through February 26, 2010, with an opening reception on Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at 4 pm.
The show features the works of photographers, sculptors and painters who utilize dioramas or constructed models, either as part of the process of making their work, or as the finished artwork itself. DiDonato feels that “as they explore the space between reality and fabrication, the work of the artists represented in the exhibit can blur the boundaries between media, as well as between the concrete and the imagined.”
Showing some of her silver gelatin photographic prints, Laura Gail Tyler is “interested in simple architectural structures such as bridges, towers and houses. To address some of the associations we have with these icons, I photograph model structures made from unlikely materials. The techniques can include cake decorating, pumpkin carving, gingerbread houses, sand castles, snow forts and playing card houses… There is tension created between grand or idealized structures constructed of something so obviously small and impermanent.”
Works by Thomas Doyle are also being displayed. Doyle feels that his pieces’ “radically reduced scales evoke feelings of omnipotence… Hovering above the glass, the viewer approaches these worlds as an all-seeing eye, looking down upon landscapes that dwarf and threaten the figures within.”
Additional artists featured in the exhibit include Jim Snitzer and Liz Hickok.
