Brockport alumna and Hilton elementary school teacher Suzanne Pilon ’87, ’95 was honored by President Barack Obama during a ceremony at the White House on January 6.
Pilon was one of three SUNY graduates, and about 80 educators nationwide, honored through Obama’s “Educate to Innovate” campaign for excellence in science and math initiative. Pilon was recognized for her “contributions to teaching and learning” and “ability to help students make progress in mathematics and science,” according to the Presidential Awards Web site.
“I believe so strongly in the work that you do,” Obama said at the ceremony. “Leadership tomorrow depends on how we educate our kids today. … Our future is on the line.”
“Teaching and mentoring by SUNY faculty and alumni has an immeasurable positive impact on students of all ages in New York state and across the country,” said Chancellor Nancy Zimpher. “I am most pleased that President Obama has recognized the talent of three individuals who have truly made a difference in the lives of their students and in their schools and local communities.”
“The award is a tremendous honor. To be a part of discovery with children, to facilitate their journey and give them room to think for themselves, is the finest work I know,” said Pilon.
Pilon won a $10,000 grant from the National Science Foundation, a paid trip to Washington, D.C., and a signed certificate. “The award is a tremendous honor,” Pilon said. “To be a part of discovery with children, to facilitate their journey and give them room to think for themselves is the finest work I know. This award will inspire, motivate and invigorate me to continue learning avidly and teaching passionately as well as serve as an illumination for the future.”
The winners were selected by a panel of scientists, mathematicians and educators after an initial selection process done at the state level.
