College President John R. Halstead issued the following statement.
"Earlier today, Governor David Paterson—collaborating with SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher—issued a news release featuring a monumental bill entitled The Public Higher Education Empowerment and Innovation Act.
The Act clearly recognizes that our SUNY institutions are economic drivers that create jobs and educate future citizens in the Empire State. This comprehensive bill will offer tremendous and long awaited flexibility to our SUNY campuses, especially related to a fair and equitable tuition policy. These sweeping changes would end over-regulation and enable greater opportunities for public-private partnerships and entrepreneurial activities to boost the state’s economy. In addition, the Act would streamline the processes for construction projects and procurement.
It’s my hope that the citizens of New York will also support this Act and recognize the benefits to the hundreds of thousands of students who attend SUNY."
