Irshad Khan
Brockport, NY – If your only experience with a sitar is hearing something in the background while you are picking at a pakora on your plate, you have not experienced Irshad Khan. Khan, considered one of the finest sitar players in the world, will be appearing in concert at The College at Brockport on Friday, February 12, 2010 at 7:30 pm. Khan will appear in the Seymour College Union Ballroom, Residence Drive.
The Boston Globe calls Khan’s performances “scintillating,” and the Toronto Star cheers that his “charismatic music mesmerizes the audience.”
As a child prodigy, Khan made his international debut at 13, in London. Since then he has performed pure classical, folk, worldbeat or new age music on sitar or surbahar (bass sitar) in concerts, music festivals and conferences in more than 30 countries on five continents.
Khan comes from a long line of classical sitarists: his father, Ustad Imrat Khan, taught both Brian Jones, of The Rolling Stones, and George Harrison, of The Beatles, but the lineage goes back to the 19th century sitarist, when his grandfather Imdad Khan was a court musician and performed for Queen Victoria. (Ustad is a bestowed title, indicating a distinguished level of musicianship.)
Khan is the founder/president of Universal Academy for Musicians, based in Mississauga, ON, and Mumbai, India. In addition to performing internationally, he also conducts workshops, lectures and master classes in various educational institutions.
Tickets for the concert are $12/General, $10/Seniors, College at Brockport Alumni, Faculty and Staff and $8/Students and are available by phone at (585) 395-ARTS or at the Tower Fine Arts Center Box Office. Tickets can also be obtained at all Rochester area Wegmans markets.
