Brockport, NY – The College at Brockport Alumna Shawn Jackett ’06 was recently awarded the prestigious Fellows New Teacher Award for his work as an Honors and Regents-level Living Environment teacher at Fairport High School, Fairport, NY.
Jackett graduated from The College at Brockport with a Bachelor of Science in Adolescent Biology Education. He is currently pursuing his Masters in Science Education with a Concentration in Biology at Brockport.
“When reflecting on my teacher education at Brockport ,I think of the dedication put forth by my professors. My professors were seasoned veterans in the field of education and taught me the skills needed to be successful in my career,” said Jackett. “I was well prepared for everything from resume writing to unit planning. I value my time spent at Brockport so much that I am furthering my education there with a Master’s in Education. Thank you College at Brockport for allowing me to attain my dream career!”
At the award ceremony, which took place in Rochester, NY, Jackett was presented with a plaque by Arnie Serotsky, president of the Science Teachers Association of New York State (STANYS). This award, established by the STANYS Fellowship Committee in 1992, supports a second or third year teacher’s attendance of the annual STANYS Conference.
“The 21st century, like no century before, will require an ever-increasing need for a scientifically literate population. Educating the next generation of students to the expanding nature of science is a critically important task,” said Peter Veronesi, associate professor of science education at Brockport. “This award recognizes his long hours of dedicated science teacher preparation, his passion for science teaching, and long-term commitment to science education and to his students.”
Originally from Batavia, NY, Jackett now lives in Fairport, NY. Along with teaching at Fairport High School, he also coaches the science Olympiad team as well as the basketball team. On his own, Jackett competes regularly in running races and duathlons and looks forward to competing in triathlons over the summer.
