Friends, Family and Feminism Inspire Dance Works

Press Release Photo Photo Credit: Jim Dusen

Brockport, NY — Mixing works by undergraduate and graduate students, The College at Brockport’s Department of Dance will present DANCE Strasser on Thursday through Saturday, March 25 – 27, 2010, at 7:30 pm, in the Rose L. Strasser Studio, Hartwell Hall, Kenyon Street.

Aristotle inspired Brigid Gillis to create “Insufficient Heat,” based on his theory that embryos needed sufficient heat to fully develop; embryos without sufficient heat became female. Rebecca Sproul’s “Flor Foe Femme,” presents pictorial vignettes of flower baskets carried and passed amongst four women who seem to float. Chrissy King’s solo “By Way of Air,” performed to music by Fiona Apple, captures the nuance of an individual’s attempt to release stress in cathartic fashion.

A Ray Charles song complements Kathy Diehl’s trio based on female relationships titled “Conversations.” In contrast, Rebecca McArthur’s “An Autumn’s Fall” is a creative response to the passing of three friends within the span of one month, and reflects three different worlds coming together within a single dance. When Jessica Moore overheard someone say “white lies are great because nobody knows you are lying,” it inspired her dance “White Lie,” in which the definition of a white lie — “done for the greater good” — contradicts the entangled situations that can evolve when one is told. “Cuesta Abajo,” choreographed by Andrea Vázquez and performed to “A Vaca Do fogo,” looks at the generational differences between women in her family. Additional works and choreographers include “Love is a Virtue” by Lauren Kush, and “Unbalanced Chemistry” by Owen Scarlett.

In order to help the audience navigate the works, as well as helping choreographers refine clarity and movements, talkbacks are scheduled to take place immediately following the concerts on March 25 and 27.

Tickets are $12 General, $10/Seniors, College at Brockport Alumni, Faculty and Staff and $8/Students and are available by phone at (585) 395-ARTS or at the Tower Fine Arts Center Box Office, 180 Holley Street, Brockport. Tickets may also be available at the Box Office in Hartwell Hall one hour prior to each performance. -end-
