The rain stopped and the sky brightened and ground was broken for the College’s $40+ million Special Events Recreation Center. MC Frank Short, PhD, Dean of the School of Health and Human Performance, ascribing the project’s genesis to an e-mail written by Professor Joseph Winnick, PhD, KSSP, to then President Paul Yu that proved to be the right idea at the right time.
President John R. Halstead welcomed the audience of more than 200 guests, faculty, staff and students calling the milestone “a momentous day for the College at Brockport, for all of Western New York and for countless future generations of students." After thanking the many people involved in bringing the project to the groundbreaking stage, he thanked the Brockport students and the Brockport Student Government, represented by President Even Brengel. “While the facility will be enjoyed by many constituents, it is first and foremost a place for our students to enhance their education both physically and intellectually. This fits perfectly with our #1 mission of student success,” Halstead said.
Jeff VanDenBurgh, Capital Program Manager for the State University of New York Construction Fund recognized those who made the College/SUNY Construction Fund partnership a smooth one and noted that the SERC “will be truly transform The College at Brockport and the students will benefit from everything it has to offer.”
