Senior Melissa Hill (Rochester, NY/Brighton HS) has been voted The College at Brockport’s 2009-10 Outstanding Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the coaching and athletic administrative staff at the College.
Hill led the Golden Eagle Women’s Lacrosse team in nearly all statistical categories as the team earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history and advanced to the second round before losing to the defending national champions Franklin & Marshall.
Hill carries a 3.90 grade point average as a Spanish major with a concentration in teacher certification.
The senior was a first-team All-Region selection and led Brockport with 48 goals, 11 free-position goals, 67 groundballs, 50 draw controls and 50 caused turnovers as the team finished with a 13-4 record with all four loses coming against teams ranked in the top-20 national rankings.
Brockport earned the No. 20 spot in the national poll for the final two weeks of the regular season.
Senior Lauren Gildemeyer (Baldwinsville, NY/CW Baker HS) was voted The College at Brockport 2009-10 Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year by the coaching and athletic administrative staff at the College.
The awards caps Gildemeyer’s outstanding collegiate career that included leading the Golden Eagle Gymnastics team to a second consecutive second place finish at the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) National Championships in 2010. The team also won its third Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) team championship in the past four years and set the school record for a team score with a 190.050 against SUNY Cortland during the regular season.
Individually, Gildemeyer tied her career-high in the floor exercise with a 9.9 and also captured first in the all-around competition leading Brockport to its third ECAC Championship title in the last four seasons. She scored a career high 38.600 in the all-around at Cornell, which ranks second best all-time at Brockport and her vault of 9.8 at the Brockport Invitational tied the school record. The ECAC Conference named her Gymnast of the Year for 2010.
Gildemeyer also received three All-America awards at the NCGA Championships, placing second with 9.700 in the floor exercise, fifth all-around with 37.625, and tied for 10th in the vault (9.050). Her performance qualified her to compete in the NCAA Division I Regional Championships, where she finished 14th in the floor exercise.
Gildemeyer is the third gymnast to represent The College at Brockport at the Division I Regional Championships, where she also was an alternate in 2008.
Senior Steve Abgarian (Merrick, NY/Bellmore JFK HS) was voted The College at Brockport’s 2009-10 Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year by the coaching and athletic administrative staff at the College.
Abgarian led the Golden Eagle Men’s Soccer team to the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament championship and the second round of the NCAA Tournament en route to earning the first All-American award for men’s soccer at Brockport since 1974. The senior forward led the team with 12 goals and four assists for 28 points and had four game-winning goals.
He was a First-Team All-SUNYAC selection, a First-Team All-Region selection and earned Third-Team All-America honors.
