The Brockport Rotary Club presented its annual Citizen of the Year Award to The College at Brockport on Friday, June 25. Roxanne Johnston, vice president for advancement at the College, accepted the award on behalf of College President John Halstead at the Club's annual changeover dinner. It was the first time since the award was reincarnated in 2003 that the club honored an institution rather than an individual(s). The award cites the College at Brockport for having "helped make Brockport a better place in which to live.”

The nominating letter also stated that “Without the College, Brockport would not be the largest village in the county, nor would it enjoy the benefits of the College’s large and educated workforce, many of who reside in and around the village providing not only customers and taxpayers, but of at least equal importance community leaders and volunteers. Not only is the college an economic force, but it is also the cultural and educational engine for the community.”

Johnston, accepting the award plaque from Rotary President Fred Kimmel, said that, “the College appreciates an award from a Brockport service organization whose own work is so important to bettering the lives of those residing in the Brockport area.”

Later in the program Kimmel announced the Club's intention to create a scholarship at the College, the details of which are being considered at this time. He did mention the club's interest in international students and international education studies. Currently the Brockport Rotary Club supports two children at the Amani Home for Children in Moshe, Tanzania and is supportive of Rotary International's attempts to improve the lives of the world's less fortunate.
