“Game Face,” choreographed by Monica Bill Barnes (Battery Park City in New York City)
Brockport, NY — The dance season at The College at Brockport gets off to an early and unique start with a series of performances created for 21 Brockport dancers by Monica Bill Barnes. Barnes furthers her reputation for creating site-specific works by presenting the premiere of “Possible Weather” on the Brockport campus on Tuesday, September 7, 2010, at 3:45 pm; Wednesday, September 8 at 2:30 pm and Thursday, September 9 at 1:45 pm. The best viewing for the dance will be located at the flagpole on the campus mall, on the south side of Holley Street. The performances are free, open to the public, and will be performed rain or shine.
Throughout her career, Barnes has created 12 evening length dance works, numerous site-specific events and several cabaret numbers for her company, Monica Bill Barnes & Company. Her choreography has been produced in more than 20 venues in New York City, including the prestigious Joyce Theater, and in 30 additional cities, nationally and internationally, including Florence, Italy; Yaroslav, Russia; Karlsruhe, Germany; San Diego; Washington, DC; and Philadelphia and their most recent engagement, at the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival.
To facilitate creating her piece in during the short-term residency period, Barnes auditioned and selected the dancers she will be working with during Spring 2010, when she scouted sites around the Brockport campus. She and the dancers will work on the piece during an intensive Labor Day weekend a part of Barnes’ weeklong residency. In addition to classes taught to Brockport students, other components of her residency include a class, taught by Barnes, at the University of Rochester on Tuesday, September 7 at 11 am (call 585-273-5150 for more information), and a workshop for community professionals about the creation of site specific works on Thursday, September 9 from 5:30 – 8:30 pm in Hartwell Hall.
