Sankofa leads the way
On Sunday afternoon (August 29) The College at Brockport officially welcomed the 1,065 members of the freshman class as well the 900 new students making up the transfer class.
They were entertained by the Sankofa African Dance and Drum Ensemble and the Akoma Ntoaso Dance Ensemble College president John R. Halstead, PhD, welcomed the classes as “the most talented and diverse in our history and the reason we are here.” He encouraged each student to “have goals that burn so brightly that you don’t even have to write them down.”
The College then recognized Sanford Miller, PhD, professor of mathematics for being one of only six SUNY faculty members in 2010 to be named to the State University of New York’s top academic rank of distinguished professor. ProvostAnne E. Huot, PhD, noted that the honor reflects not only on Miller’s outstanding academic career but also upon the Brockport faculty as “among the best in the world.”
Kelly Sabetta ’07, founder and president of Betta Book Publishing, delivered the alumna address urging the new students to take advantage of all the opportunities, both in and out of the classroom, that the College will make available to them over the next four years.
Current student, Danielle Gentile ’11 advised the new students to “become connected to the College, be fearless in asking for help and to pursue their academic career for themselves.”
