Brockport, NY—Taunja Isaac, a senior at The College at Brockport, State University of New York, has been selected to receive the 2011 Sherrill’s Promise Award. Isaac will graduate in May with a major in Journalism and Broadcasting and a minor in Film Studies.
The Sherrill’s Promise Award is granted to an adult student who has been especially successful in achieving academic excellence and demonstrating leadership, while balancing life responsibilities, professional work, and giving back through community service. Recipients must exhibit courageousness in their life journey, resilience in meeting their academic and personal goals and success in moving themselves beyond life’s circumstances.
Isaac has excelled academically as a full-time student as well as fulfilling the duties of a devoted single parent. The self-confidence and strength she found through academics allowed her to keep motivated and overcome life’s toughest obstacles. Isaac’s many accomplishments include volunteering at a recreation center in the City of Rochester and creating and presenting a film at the McNair Summer Research Conference—all while remaining on the Dean’s List every semester of her undergraduate career. Isaac resides in Greece, NY.
“As Taunja’s faith in her intellectual abilities has grown, she has come to exemplify the true spirit of our namesake, Ronald McNair,” said Barbara Thompson, director of CSTEP/McNair at The College at Brockport, who nominated Isaac for this award. “Taunja is an example of someone who has used her own struggles to not only become stronger personally, but to strengthen her community as well.”
The Sherrill's Promise Award was established by the family of the late Ms. Sherrill M. (Simon) Clay, an adult student who earned a BA in Psychology at The College at Brockport, magna cum laude in 1995.
