BROCKPORT, NY—Hollywood screenwriter Stuart Krieger told 1,747 new graduates of The College at Brockport, State University of New York, that it’s natural to be scared as they embark on a new chapter of their life. In fact, during his May 12 Commencement address at the College’s undergraduate student ceremony, Krieger said he’d be concerned if they weren’t scared.
“If the thought of going after your true dream doesn’t scare the living daylights out of you, it only means one thing—you’re playing it too safe. You’re trying to take the easy road,” says Krieger, a 1973 Brockport graduate. “You should be scared but, deep down, you also need to believe you can and will get where you need to go with the right combination of hard work, perseverance, and pure dumb luck.”
Krieger revealed the terrifying pursuit of his own dream of a career in show business—leaving Brockport for Los Angeles in 1973 without knowing where he would live or how he would make a living. But the end result was a career that was highlighted by winning an Emmy Award, penning the animated classic The Land Before Time, and writing 10 of the original 50 Disney Channel movies.
“Was any of that easy? Nope. Were there incredibly sad, depressing, demoralizing and humiliating days along the way? Yup. Plenty. Did I ever consider folding up my tent and packing it in? Oh yeah. Yearly,” Krieger said. “But if you really have a dream, if you have a passion and commitment, and a true desire to lead an interesting life—today is the time to start going for it.”
The ceremony also featured remarks from United States Senator Charles Schumer and Brockport President John R. Halstead, PhD.
Schumer shared his own experiences that followed his graduation from college and then offered the graduates a bit of advice.
“My advice to the Class of 2012 is very simple,” the Senator said. “Go for it.”
Halstead lauded the talent of the Class of 2012 before conferring their degrees.
“Graduates, you have great strengths—great human potential,” he said. “My personal congratulations to each and every one of you. This is your day!”
