BROCKPORT, NY—The long-awaited 2012 Homecoming Weekend was an enormous success. It was a transformational weekend for The College at Brockport, State University of New York—and more than 500 alumni took part in it.

Festivities kicked off Sept. 13 with a ceremonial tree planting, which is a longtime Brockport tradition. Representatives from the Class of 1962—which celebrates its 50th reunion this weekend—and members of the Class of 2012 came together to plant trees on Brockport’s Alumni Walk.

“We have 464 acres on campus and this is one of my favorite spots,” said Brockport President John R. Halstead, PhD, before the ceremony. “It’s very peaceful here and I enjoy walking through this area and remembering our alumni classes.”

Scott Harrington, a 2012 graduate, shared Halstead’s sentiments. He says he’s often given thought to previous classes as he walks through the area.

“There have been many people who have come through Brockport with great success,” Harrington said. “The growth of these trees signifies the growth of the school and alumni.”

Bill Setek, a 1962 graduate, used the opportunity to reflect on the important work Brockport does.

“I think these trees offer a sense of permanence,” Setek said. “Thank God this place was here for me and it’s still here for students today. Brockport provides you with an opportunity. Education gives you the keys to open doors in life.”

The tree planting was just the first of a number events over the weekend, which features the grand opening of Brockport’s $44 million, 160,000 square-foot Special Events Recreation Center (SERC). Other highlights included:

• Hartwell Society Reception & Luncheon Honoring the Class of ‘62
• The SERC ribbon cutting
• The ribbon cutting of the modernized Smith Hall science building
• A campus picnic and pep rally
• Opening Ceremonies in the SERC
• Homecoming Parade
• The Golden Eagles football team taking on The College of New Jersey
• A 5K Run/Walk and Roll
