BROCKPORT, NY—As its community continues to mourn the loss of freshman Alexandra Kogut, The College at Brockport, State University of New York, is embracing its Select Respect Week—a week of domestic violence awareness activities that have been planned to celebrate National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Below is a list of activities that will take place later this week:
Wednesday, Oct. 3
• Walk a Mile in Her Shoes: Students will sign a pledge promising not to engage in domestic violence. Male students will then strap on a pair of high heels and walk across the College Mall to demonstrate their commitment to stopping domestic violence. 10 am until 3 pm, College Mall outside Seymour Student Union.
• Shelby Knox Lecture: Social Justice Leader Shelby Knox will present “Just Do It: Empowering Students for Social Change.” Knox is best known for her award-winning film, The Education of Shelby Knox, a 2005 documentary chronicling her teenage activism for comprehensive sex education and gay rights in her Southern Baptist community. 7 pm, Seymour College Union Ballroom.
Thursday, Oct. 4
• Operation Green & Gold: Students write an individual statement in which they stand up and speak out against domestic violence, many pledging to do something personally to help prevent it. That statement, and a photo of each individual, is then turned into a poster to show their support.
Media interested in covering these events should contact John Follaco at 585-503-9072.
