Nicole Kaplan, who recently appeared in the Rochester Fringe Festival, will be unveiling her MFA thesis project, “Mapping,” which features eight women who inhabiting a world where complex rhythm structures are brought to life through athleticism, risk and unpredictable partnering sequences.
Taking advantage of a burgeoning male presence in the Department of Dance, Michelle Glynn, the recipient of the Bette Bailey Scholarship for Excellence in Dance, created a trio, “The XY Variables,” which includes Norwegian exchange student from the University of Stravangar, Sebastian Solem. MFA candidate Oluyinka Akinjiola invigorates the stage with a female quintet, “Mojúba,” that is accompanied by live music performed by master drummer Khalid Saleem and his ensemble. Dance/STRASSER will also feature new choreography by Christy Benincasa, Corina Ferro, Roberta Guido, Ian Heckman, Meghan McGuire, Rebecca Puretz, Jessie Sector, Robin Wonka and Julia Zdrojewski.
Artistic director Mariah Maloney is excited to capitalize on the recent participation of so many Brockport dancers and choreographers in the Rochester Fringe Festival. Her perspective is that “it is exciting to harness the fresh energy of the Fringe inside DANCE/Strasser, where one can enjoy a high standard of artistry, talent and vision possessed by student choreographers and performers.”
Any previously unsold tickets will be available for purchase at the Hartwell Box Office one hour prior to each performance. -end-
