BROCKPORT, NY—Betsy Balzano, PhD, has received a three-year grant from the New York State Department of Education’s Teacher/Leader Quality Partnership Program. Balzano is a Distinguished Service Professor in The College at Brockport, State University of New York’s Department of Education & Human Development.
The grant—which totals $177,994 a year over the three-year period—will support the “Gearing Up for Grade 8 Mathematics” program, which offers professional development to 30 Brockport pre-service elementary school teachers and also to 30 existing grade six and seven mathematics teachers in the Rochester City and East Irondequoit School Districts. The program will impact 720 students in those two districts.
The project is designed to strengthen the pedagogical skills and mathematics content knowledge of current teachers through job embedded professional development, positively impact student achievement through after school enrichment activities in math clubs, to offer tutoring in mathematics during the school day, and to provide Brockport pre-service teacher candidates with experience working with students during and after school under the guidance of an experienced teacher.
