Brockport, NY – The College at Brockport’s Department of Dance will present DANCE/Hartwell, featuring the premieres of MFA thesis works choreographed by Falon Baltzell and Julianna Utz. Performances are Thursday, November 1, through Saturday, November 3, 2012, at 7:30 pm as well as an additional Saturday matinee performance on November 3 at 2 pm. The concerts take place in the Hartwell Dance Theater, Kenyon Street, on the Brockport campus. Tickets are $15/General, $10/Seniors, Alumni, Faculty and Staff, and $8/Students and are available by phone at (585) 395-2787 or at the Tower Fine Arts Center Box Office, 180 Holley Street, Brockport.
The concert also includes graduate student Janet Schroeder's piece, "Beat It," originally created for La Compañía de Danza Contemporánea, a professional company in Puebla, Mexico, where Schroeder served as guest artist in July 2012. The US premiere of "Beat It," performed by Brouhaha (with Brockport dancers), was in Schroeder's MFA thesis concert "Tap and..." at the Rochester Fringe Festival. Schroeder and the cast just returned from a performance of “Tap and…” in Ottawa, Ohio.
“Ensconce,” choreographed by Falon Baltzell, focuses on restricting movements with an attention to spatial exploration. Baltzell is a two-time scholarship recipient for summer study at the Bill Evans Summer Teachers’ Intensive, which is held each summer at The College at Brockport.
Juliana Utz's piece, “Through the Keyhole,” explores concentrated aspects within the art of the solo such as the relationship and energy dynamic between soloists versus a group of dancers. Utz received the Payton Choreographic Award, named for former faculty member James Payton, in the spring.
Other works in this concert are newly created modern dance pieces by graduate and undergraduate choreographers selected by an adjudication committee which included students and faculty artistic directors James Hansen and Mariah Maloney. According to Hansen, “In choosing pieces, the committee looked for original ideas, inventive movement vocabulary and diverse approaches to modern dance.”
Any previously unsold tickets will be available for purchase at the Hartwell Box Office one hour prior to each performance.
