BROCKPORT, NY—The Writers Forum features celebrated authors and poets scheduled to visit The College at Brockport, State University of New York, for its 49th season. The Writers Forum is sponsored by the Department of English. All readings, unless otherwise noted, begin at 8:00 pm in the New York Room of Cooper Hall on the Brockport campus. All readings are free and open to the public.
Laura Moriarty, Feb. 13: Lauren Moriarty is the author of The Chaperone, While I’m Falling, and The Center of Everything. She also teaches creative writing at the University of Kansas-Lawrence.
Ira Sukrungruang, Feb. 27: Ira Sukrungruang, a Thai-American writer, is the author of the memoir Talk Thai: The Adventures of Buddhist Boy. He is the co-editor of Scoot Over, Skinny: The Fat Nonfiction Anthology and teaches in the MFA program at the University of South Florida.
Katha Pollitt, March 27: Katha Pollitt is a poet and political columnist. She has two works of poetry published, including The Mind Body Problem. She is well known for her award-winning column in The Nation magazine, titled “Subject to Debate.” Her visit is being jointly promoted with the Department of Women and Gender Studies.
Christopher Kennedy, April 17: Christopher Kennedy is the author of Encouragement for a Man Falling to His Death, Trouble with the Machine and Nietzsche’s Horse. He is an associate professor of English at Syracuse University and the director of the MFA program in creative writing.
Cheryl Strayed, May 1, 7:30 pm at Temple B’rith Kodesh: New York Times Bestselling Author Cheryl Strayed will receive the distinguished Art of Fact award. She is best known for her book Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail that was published in more than 40 countries. Wild was chosen by Oprah Winfrey to be included in Oprah’s Book Club 2.0. Her writing has been featured in The New York Times Magazine, The Washington Post Magazine, Vogue, Allure, and Self. Previous winners of the Art of Fact Award include Augusten Burroughs, author of Running With Scissors, and Susan Orlean, author of Rin Tin Tin.
The Writer’s Forum has hosted acclaimed authors, editors, poets and cartoonists since it was founded in 1967. The forum is well known across the country for its dedication and commitment to keeping the art of writing an important part of current and future generations.
