BROCKPORT, NY—The College at Brockport, State University of New York, campus will be breaking out in dance Feb. 14. Not in celebration—but in revolution.
To commemorate the 15th anniversary of Eve Ensler’s V-Day Stop Violence Against Women Movement, Brockport will participate in a global event called One Billion Rising. At 2:14 pm, participants will be asked to “walk out, dance, rise up, and demand an end to this violence.” At Brockport, students, faculty, and staff are being encouraged to participate in a dance that has been choreographed by Nicole Kaplan, a graduate student in Brockport’s dance program.
One in three women will be raped or beaten in her lifetime. The One Billion Rising movement is designed as a call to women and men to refuse to participate in the status quo until rape and rape culture ends. It is an act of solidarity that seeks to demonstrate to women the commonality of their struggles and their power in numbers.
In addition to the spontaneous dancing that will take place around campus at 2:14 pm, other events are planned as part of the One Billion Rising movement. Flash mobs will take place at 10:14 am on the Drake Memorial Library main floor and at 12:14 pm in the Seymour Student Union. Later that evening, an open-mic poetry reading, musical performance, and visual presentation event will take place at 7:14 pm in the Jitterbugs Café inside of the Seymour Student Union.
Brockport’s participation in the One Billion Rising movement is being organized by its Department of Women and Gender Studies in partnership with the Departments of Dance, Art, English, Theatre, Music, and Brockport’s Women’s Center.
Those interested in learning the choreographed dance and participating in any of the dance events can attend an open dance session prior to the event. All sessions will be held in 64 Hartwell Hall:
