Brockport Helps Students Find Their Voice

Annual Student Leadership Conference inspires students

BROCKPORT, NY—A college football legend visited The College at Brockport, State University of New York, Feb. 24 to help develop the next generation of leaders. Don McPherson, a former Syracuse University standout quarterback who was the 1987 runner-up for the Heisman Trophy and is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, delivered the keynote speech at Brockport’s Sixth Annual Student Leadership Conference.

McPherson—who is well known for his work with social justice, particularly in the area of women’s rights and social education—encouraged students to find their passion and act on it.

“I look forward to this conference every year because I always learn something from the keynote and the presenters,” says junior Jeiri Flores. “Don McPherson was extremely passionate and made me feel like I could achieve my dream of starting my own advocacy organization.”

The theme of this year’s conference was “Find Your Voice.” Students were invited to reflect on the impact they have as leaders in the community. Nearly 400 Brockport students, staff and alumni participated in the conference which, in addition to McPherson’s keynote, offered interactive workshops and networking opportunities.

Alumni hosted concurrent sessions which addressed issues ranging from combating oppression through the arts to exploring women’s leadership. Brockport’s Department of Alumni Relations capped the afternoon by hosting a reception that allowed students and alumni to network and forge connections. The alumni participation particularly inspired Flores.

“In my session with Henry Padrón, ‘86, he taught me that it’s okay to go against the grain to speak up for what you believe in,” Flores said.

The conference also involved student-athletes and those involved in Greek Life, through Community Development. The planning committee for this event consisted of faculty, staff, and students from the Leadership Development Program, Student Union and Activities, Alumni Relations, Residential Life, and Recreation and Leisure Studies.
