Brockport, NY – The Fine Arts Series at The College at Brockport has had a long-standing relationship with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. Through this connection, the Series has presented an annual concert with the full orchestra, and has presented its jazz ensemble, as well. On Thursday, March 28, 2013, at 7:30 pm, The Arco Trio, comprised of three string players from the RPO, will grace the Tower Fine Arts Center Mainstage, allowing for an intimate exploration of works composed by Mozart, Haydn, Bartok and others. The Tower building is located at 180 Holley Street, Brockport. Ticket prices are $15/General, $10/Seniors, College at Brockport Alumni, Faculty and Staff and $8/Students and are available by phone at (585) 395-2787 or at the Tower Fine Arts Center Box Office.

The trio is comprised of Shannon Nance and Lara Sipols on violins and Stefan Reuss on the cello. Nance is the assistant concertmaster for the RPO, and Reuss is the principal cellist. In addition to being an RPO violinist, Sipols teaches the Music Appreciation course at the College, which is part of the College’s association with the RPO. She relishes being an educator, but “after working with students on campus to reach a deeper understanding of music, it’s quite a privilege to share a live performance with them, too.”

Playing in a large orchestra presents its own challenges, and also dictates — to some degree — the sort of repertoire played at concerts. Sipols’ unique perspective is that “playing in an orchestra requires a keen awareness of what surrounds you and what you are being asked to do by the conductor. The idea is to contribute and fit into a larger picture; a big sound. It can feel very exciting, like doing the wave in a stadium. On the other hand, playing chamber music feels more nimble and collaborative. With no central leader, each player in the group gets to help make decisions about direction of the music. It is more personal, like playing in a band with a few of your buddies.”
