Press Release Photo DANCE/Hartwell

Brockport, NY– The Department of Dance at The College at Brockport will present DANCE/Hartwell, featuring choreography by undergraduate and graduate students in Brockport’s nationally renowned dance program. Performances are Thursday through Saturday, April 18 – 20, 2013, at 7:30 pm in Hartwell Dance Theater, Kenyon Street, on the Brockport campus. Ticket prices are $15/General, $10/Seniors, College at Brockport Alumni, Faculty and Staff and $8/Students and are available by phone at (585) 395-2787 or at the Tower Fine Arts Center Box Office. Visit www.brockport.edu/finearts for more information.

This concert features new work by graduate and undergraduate choreographers. Selected by an adjudication committee that included students and faculty artistic directors Suzanne Oliver and Karl Rogers, the program epitomizes the vibrant creative energy and eclectic artistic aesthetic that is flourishing in the department. Cornerstones of the concert include two MFA thesis projects by Amanda McCullum and Anna Corvera. Confronting assumptions of feminine prowess through characterization, song, and dance, McCullum’s “Musing on Sirens and Whores” is a highly theatrical work danced passionately by a cast of 16. In contrast, Corvera investigates the intersection of sport and dance in “Sound Mind Sound Body.” Every aspect of the dance — from the title, to the costumes, to the relationships between the dancers — explores the blending of the two worlds of dance artistry and competitive sport. While these pieces comprise the core of the evening, rounding out the program are diverse works that Oliver feels “range from the powerful to the poetic, featuring choreography that will engage and inspire both novice and sophisticated viewers.” Any previously unsold tickets will be available for purchase at the Hartwell Box Office one hour prior to each performance.
