Renowned Scholars to Speak at Brockport Commencement Ceremonies May 17-18

Jane Clark and Lynn Parsons to deliver undergraduate and graduate commencement addresses

BROCKPORT, NY—The College at Brockport, State University of New York, has announced its 2013 Commencement speakers.

Jane Clark, the dean of the School of Public Health at the University of Maryland, College Park and a 1968 Brockport graduate, will address students at the undergraduate ceremonies on May 18. Historian Lynn Parsons, who penned a biography of John Quincy Adams and is an Emeritus Professor of History at Brockport, will deliver the graduate address on May 17.

“We are incredibly proud that our newest graduates will hear from two of our own during our Commencement ceremonies this spring,” says Brockport President John R. Halstead, PhD. “Jane Clark and Lynn Parsons have achieved the type of professional success that we hope each of our students will strive to achieve. They are tremendous role models for our graduates as they embark on the next phase of their lives.”

Clark’s research has focused on understanding the development of movement control and coordination in motor skills, particularly the development of posture and locomotion. She has secured nearly $3 million in grants from organizations that include the National Science Foundation and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). A longtime professor of kinesiology, Clark was the founding editor of Kinesiology Review. The State University of New York will award Clark with an honorary doctor of science degree.

Parsons is a longtime professor of history at Brockport, where he chaired the Department of History. He earned his PhD from Johns Hopkins University. In addition to his biography of John Quincy Adams, Parsons has published essays on Adams and his mother, Abigail, and has written a play, The Tye More Binding, based on the correspondence of Abigail and John Adams.

Brockport Commencement will have a slightly different feel this year, as it moves into the College’s newly opened Special Events and Recreation Center. The graduate ceremony will take place at 5 pm on Friday, May 17. Brockport will now hold two undergraduate ceremonies, both on Saturday, May 18. Students from the School of Health and Human Performance and the School of Science and Mathematics will graduate at 9 am. Students from the Schools of The Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; Business Administration and Economics; and Education and Human Services will graduate at 2:30 pm.
