Brockport, NY – A program that had its germination five years ago has turned into an annual celebration at The College at Brockport, State University of New York. The Student Leadership Awards Ceremony was held April 29 in the Seymour College Union Ballroom, and several hundred student leaders were on hand to applaud themselves as well as the first group of students to complete the four-year program.
President John R. Halstead, PhD, welcomed the crowd and urged the students to “find your voice,” which was the theme of this year’s ceremony.
Starting with the Green Leadership program in 2009-10, the Leadership Development program has added a level of programming each year, culminating in this year’s first-ever Capstone certificate. The Leadership Development Program consists of:
Green Leadership Certificate: This certificate focuses on the first three Cs of the Social Change Model of Leadership Development: Consciousness of Self, Congruence, and Commitment. 125 students received their Green Certificate at the ceremony.
Gold Leadership Certificate: This certificate focuses on the second three Cs of the Social Change Model of Leadership Development: Collaboration, Common Purpose, and Controversy with Civility. 55 students received their Gold Certificate at the ceremony.
Presidential Leadership Certificate: This certificate focuses on Citizenship, and students who complete this passed a two-credit course and a semester-long internship. 11 students received their Presidential Leadership Certificate at the ceremony.
Capstone Leadership Certificate: This is the culminating level of the Leadership Development Program and emphasizes the ability of individuals to enact change. Six students received this certificate in the Capstone’s inaugural class.
In addition to the Leadership program certificates, 17 individual/group awards were presented, including the highest individual leadership award presented by the College.
Ashley Elmes ’13 was named recipient of the College’s annual Marion Schrank Student Leadership Award. This award is the highest leadership honor given to a student and is based on scholarly achievement, exemplary leadership, and a commitment to the College through leadership in a student organization and/or student employment.
Elmes will graduate this May with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. Among other achievements she is president of the Student Nurse Organization, captain of the College’s Field Hockey team, a member of the Brockport Student Athlete Advisory Committee, and has clinical experience at Unity Hospital, Rochester General Hospital, Strong Memorial Hospital, and the Rochester Psychiatric Center.
