BROCKPORT, NY—The College at Brockport, State University of New York, formally launched Pursue Something Greater, The Campaign for Brockport during an on-campus gala April 26. Now college officials are traveling to spread the word and build support for the ambitious $25 million comprehensive campaign.
The effort is designed to stress the importance of private fundraising support for public higher education to Brockport alumni and friends up and down the east coast. Twenty years ago, more than two-thirds of Brockport’s operating budget came from New York State. Today, that support makes up less than one-third of the College’s budget.
The campaign will support four key areas: student support (scholarships and funds that support key experiential learning opportunities such as internships, research opportunities, study abroad, etc.), support for faculty, schools and programs (endowed positions, funds for faculty research, travel and equipment), campus and facilities enhancements (classroom technology, building furnishings, etc.), and the Fund for Brockport (unrestricted dollars that can be used at the discretion of College leadership).
“This campaign is not about bricks and mortar, but rather about delivering ‘The Brockport Promise’ to our students,” Brockport President John R. Halstead, PhD, told the crowd at the April 26 launch. “Buildings and playing fields are where this promise occurs, but it’s people that embody the spirit of our College. What really matters is the quality of education we provide our students—what you see transpiring on this campus each and every day.”
SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher, PhD, is excited about what the campaign will mean for Brockport.
“The College at Brockport provides a diverse array of opportunities and this campaign is certain to attract the private investment needed to support the College’s outstanding student programs and activities, faculty research, and campus facilities,” Zimpher said. “I am highly confident that Pursue Something Greater, The Campaign for Brockport will not only meet but far exceed its $25 million goal.”
Campaign leaders will be taking that message to the following cities:
• New York, NY (May 3)
• Washington, DC (May 4)
• Rochester, NY (May 10)
• Albany, NY (May 21)
• Syracuse, NY (May 23)
