BROCKPORT, NY—W. Bruce Leslie, PhD, has been appointed to the rank of Distinguished Service Professor by the State University of New York Board of Trustees. Leslie, who teaches in the Department of History, is just the 11th faculty member in The College at Brockport’s history to receive this prestigious honor.
Leslie’s service to the State University of New York culminates a career-long commitment to his scholarly discipline—the history of higher education—and the universities to which he is connected. He has worked to highlight the history and significance of The College at Brockport. His efforts include organization of the College’s archival record, two symposia, and a book on its history. Dr. Leslie co-planned the 2009 conference, “Celebration of the 60th Anniversary of SUNY,” and co-edited the resulting book, SUNY and the Promise of Higher Education.
“It is an understatement to say that Dr. Leslie’s service to SUNY is impressive, and he has also found time to serve his discipline both at the national and international level,” says Brockport President John R. Halstead, PhD. “Dr. Leslie epitomizes the kind of individual for whom the SUNY Distinguished Service Professorship is intended.”
Brockport Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Anne E. Huot, PhD, agrees.
“Dr. Leslie’s enthusiasm is infectious, his energy boundless, and his dedication unwavering,” says Huot. “He not only excels at teaching and scholarship but also at service so that the history of education is brought to light for others and the true strength of SUNY is recognized. We are pleased to recognize this most deserving individual.”
Created by the Board of Trustees as a prestigious system-level distinction, the Distinguished Faculty Rank programs recognize and reward SUNY’s finest and most accomplished faculty. The Distinguished Service Professorship is conferred upon faculty having achieved a distinguished reputation for service not only to the campus and the University, but also to the community, the State of New York or even the nation, by sustained effort in the application of intellectual skills drawing from the candidate’s scholarly and research interests to issues of public concern.
“In bestowing its highest faculty honor, SUNY proudly recognizes the extraordinary achievements of these faculty and the positive impacts they have had on SUNY, on the students they teach and mentor, and on their colleagues both on campus and across the globe," said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher, PhD.
Leslie’s work has benefited numerous colleges in the SUNY system, the Brockport overseas program at Brunel University in London and his alma mater, Princeton University. He has also served as a Fulbright Senior Scholar at Aarhus University in Denmark and has maintained a 17-year association with the Fulbright Program.
