Brockport, NY – With one final performance signifying a capstone to their studies at The College at Brockport, BFA candidates will populate Graduation Dances, which will give two separate performances at 6:30 and 8 pm on Friday, May 17, 2013, in Hartwell Dance Theater, Kenyon Street, Brockport. The performances are free, and the public is invited to celebrate along with the dancers.
The works have been created by a variety of choreographers including outside professionals, faculty from the Department of Dance, graduate and undergraduate students. Each student chooses their own choreographer who helps set these pieces, most of which are created expressly for these concerts.
The 6:30 pm showing will feature 11 seniors who will receive their diplomas at commencement exercises the following day. Highlights of this performance include: • Assistant professor Mariah Maloney is directing a choreographic exploration by senior BFA student Lara Nixon, titled “In Universal Eidos.” The piece is an exploration of internal and external space. • Adjunct lecturer Rose Beauchamp is directing the creation of a piece by seniors Beth Buehler and Jessie Sector. The 8 pm showing features 10 dancers, including seven MFA candidates. Highlights include: • Professor William Evans has choreographed a modern dance work for MFA candidate Falon Baltzell, a Mississippi native. Called “Portrait of a (Southern) Lady,” it also includes spoken poetry by T.S. Eliot. • Janet Schroeder, an MFA candidate from Ohio, who will begin work on a PhD at The Ohio State University, has choreographed her own percussive dance solo to live music by Joel Boyer and Khalid Abdul N'Faly Saleem.
