BROCKPORT, NY—The College at Brockport’s alumni family is now 2,147 members stronger. Brockport celebrated its 2013 Undergraduate Commencement during two ceremonies on Saturday in the College’s new Special Events Recreation Center (SERC).
The graduates heard from a number of speakers, including someone who earned her Brockport degree 45 years earlier. Jane Clark, PhD, delivered the 2013 Commencement address and was presented with an honorary doctor of science degree from the State University of New York.
Clark, who is the dean of the School of Public Health at the University of Maryland, College Park, challenged Brockport’s newest graduates to continue to be curious.
“Ten years from now, will you be 10 years wiser,” Clark asked the graduates. “Just because information is abundant and ever present, that doesn’t make us smarter. You need to engage the information, critically analyze that information, and ponder the information.”
Clark is a member of Brockport’s Class of 1968 and has gone on to a prolific career as an educator and scholar. She is one of the world’s foremost experts in understanding the development of movement control and coordination in motor skills and has secured nearly $3 million in grants to support her scholarly research.
Brockport President John R. Halstead, PhD, issue a challenge to the graduates, as well.
“To you, our graduates, please remember that you’ll always be a valued member of our Brockport family. Take pride in your College; stay involved,” Halstead said. “Be good stewards in the life of your community. Sustain that relationship in your years ahead as alumni. Indeed, pursue something greater!”
The ceremony concluded with two members of the Class of 2013. Mairead Fitzgibbon presented Halstead with a check for $7,500 on behalf of the class of 2013 for the purpose of creating a scholarship. And then Brockport Student Government President Samantha Wheeler bid a final farewell to her classmates.
“We are all heading toward different futures, some clearer than others, but today we celebrate our dedication and applaud those who supported us to this point,” Wheeler said. “I don’t know where everyone will be in a year, a month, or a even a week from today, but I am proud to share this day with you all. Good luck, from one graduate of the class of 2013 to another.”
