Oh the Water by Jennifer Hecker
Housed Barrier IV by Eunsuh Choi
Brockport, NY – The faculty of the Department of Art are all practicing artists who exhibit nationally and internationally. In the recently opened Department of Art Faculty Exhibition, they are presenting their most recent works which encompass a variety of media, including ceramics, sculpture, drawing, painting, graphic design and mixed media. The show, organized by gallery director and department chairperson Tim Massey, will run through October 13, 2013. The gallery is located at 180 Holley Street, Brockport, and the exhibit is free and open to the public.
In addition to Massey, full-time faculty members showing their recent work in the show include Christian Carson, Duncan Chase, Sara DiDonato, Debra Fisher, Jennifer Hecker, Ingrid Hess, Kitty Hubbard, Phyllis Kloda, Lori Mills and Jim Morris. Adjunct faculty represented includes Eunsuh Choi, Kurt Treevy and Janet Winkie.
Hecker, who traditionally sculpts with metal, and Choi, who also teaches at Mahany’s Arc & Flame Center in Gates, are both showing works in which glass is a major component, if not the sole one. Hecker relays that “working with new materials sparks new ideas. Glass is a new material for me. Its transparency and fluidity suggest water, and I have been intrigued with sculpting with water for the last eight months.” Her piece, “Oh, the Water,” strives to devise “storage methods for dewdrops or collectwater in a holey bucket. These become metaphors for trying to hold on to the transient, the ephemeral — to life itself.” Choi, whose pieces recall delicate work with spun sugar, feels that her recent work “carries a quiet, meditative tone that leans heavily towards its spiritual emphasis.”
