Brockport Receives $1.2 Million Grant to Develop Adapted Physical Education Specialists

Department of Education grant funds 40 graduate students over a five-year period

BROCKPORT, NY—The College at Brockport, State University of New York, has received a $1.2 million grant from the United States Department of Education that will provide training and support to graduate students studying adapted physical education.

The grant provides 40 scholarships over a five-year period to graduate students who are pursuing a master’s of science in education with a concentration in adapted physical education. In addition to having their tuition fully funded, scholarship recipients also earn a $12,000 tax-free stipend. Recipients agree to work with children with disabilities upon graduation. Brockport has been able to place more than 90 percent of scholarship recipients in the field.

The grant, which Brockport has been a recipient of for more than 30 years, aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of adapted physical education teachers at the master’s level to provide direct services, serve as a resource, and work collaboratively with regular physical educators and classroom teachers to address both physical education and common core academic standards for children with disabilities in multiple settings.

This most recent grant was secured by Brockport Associate Professor of Kinesiology, Sport Studies, and Physical Education Mike Kozub, PhD. Kozub, himself, benefited from the grant when he earned a scholarship to earn a Brockport master’s degree in 1985—under the tutelage of longtime Brockport professor Joseph Winnick, PhD, who had previously been responsible for securing the grant money for the College.

“I wouldn’t have been able to afford a master’s degree without that scholarship and a master’s degree is required to gain permanent teaching certification in New York state,” Kozub said. “For me, it meant my whole career.”

Students who are interested in the scholarship can email Kozub at for more information.
