The Brockport Community to Take Back the Night

A rally and march to take place Oct. 30 at 7pm to end violence against women

BROCKPORT, NY—The College at Brockport, State University of New York, will host their annual Take Back the Night event at 7pm on Oct. 30 beginning at the Union Mall adjacent to the Seymour College Union. A rally led by domestic violence victim and counselor testimonies will precede a student and community march through the Village of Brockport.

Take Back the Night, an internationally participated event, aims to raise awareness for domestic violence and gather communities together to take a stand against violence toward women. The program’s “shatter the silence” mantra encourages both women and men to speak out against these crimes and support survivors in their community. The first rally was held in 1975 in Philadelphia and thousands of events have followed since. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the event on the Brockport campus.

The event is a collaborative effort on behalf of various College organizations: Brockport’s Social Work Department, the Student Social Work Organization (SSWO), the Women and Gender Studies Program, the Women and Genders Studies Organization (WGSO), The Women’s Center, and Brockport’s Select Respect program.
