Brockport, NY – The Brockport Symphony Orchestra will present their Holiday Pops Concert on Thursday, December 5, 2013, at 7:30 pm in the Seymour College Union Ballroom, located on Residence Drive on the Brockport campus. Under the baton of music director Jonathan Allentoff ’14, the concert will feature five accomplished soloists as well as the premiere performance of the Brockport Youth String Orchestra. There is a suggested donation of $3 for this performance. Peter Ferry, marimba soloist, will welcome in the holiday season with Ney Rosauro's "Concerto for Marimba and Orchestra," inspired by Brazilian dances. Hailed by the Democrat and Chronicle as a "percussion genius…presenting percussion in a stunning, thoughtful way," Ferry is quickly gaining recognition for meaningful, entertaining performances of contemporary repertoire. In 2013, he received the prestigious Performer's Certificate from his alma mater, the Eastman School of Music. Ferry’s 2013-2014 concert season includes solo performances and master class presentations in Illinois, Maryland, Missouri, New York, and Rhode Island.

Stephen Jessup, trumpet soloist, will perform Vince Guaraldi’s “Christmas Time is Here” for trumpet and orchestra. He is visiting assistant professor of Earth Sciences and performs as principal trumpet in the Brockport Symphony Orchestra. Jessup also performed for ten years as principal trumpet in the Cornell Wind and Jazz Ensembles, as well as in the Raritan Valley Symphonic Band. He has released a number of recordings of works for trumpet ensemble.

Tony Dumas, guitar soloist, will perform Stanley Myers’ “Cavatina” for guitar and string orchestra. He is a visiting assistant professor of music and serves as co-director of the Brockport Symphony Orchestra. Prior to coming to Brockport, Dumas taught at UC Davis, Woodland Community College, St. Lawrence University, and SUNY Potsdam. He has written for the Grove Dictionary of American Music and has presented papers at regional, national, and international meetings of the Society for Ethnomusicology (SEM), the International Association for the Study of Popular Music (IASPM), and the International Council for Traditional Music (ICTM).

Raisa Kislik, violin soloist, will perform Allentoff’s “Rhapsody on Chanukah Themes for Violin and Orchestra.” Kislik, who serves as concertmaster of the Brockport Symphony Orchestra, was the assistant concertmaster and soloist with the Moscow Musical Theatre Orchestra for more than 40 years. She has performed globally, including appearances in Europe, Israel, Japan and the US. After immigrating in 2004 to America, she joined the Brighton, Greece, and Brockport Symphony Orchestras.

Kevin Warner, vocal soloist, will perform the classic holiday songs, “Silver and Gold” and “Rock of Ages.” He will also premiere Allentoff’s arrangement of “It Comes Around the Same Time Each Year” by legendary Hollywood composer Van Alexander and producer Lee Hale. Allentoff was pleased to collaborate with Alexander on this new Christmas song, which was recently recorded by Michael Feinstein. Warner is associate professor and chair of the Department of Dance. He has choreographed and performed for companies including Ann Vachon/Dance Conduit, Shenandoah Summer Music Theatre, Opera House Theatre Company, and Melanie Stewart Dance.

The Brockport Youth String Orchestra, founded at The College at Brockport in fall 2013, will perform several holiday favorites. This new orchestra is comprised of string musicians from the Brockport elementary schools. The concert program also includes “Bourree” by G. F. Handel and the world premiere of “Dashing Through the Snow – Variations on Jingle Bells” by Dr. William Hullfish, professor emeritus of music. The audience will be invited to join the orchestra for the annual sing-a-long featuring “Auld Lang Syne” and “Jingle Bells.” -end-
