Brockport, NY –Sankofa African Dance and Drum Ensemble will perform during the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County’s 2nd Annual Multicultural Potluck on Friday, November 22, 2013, at 8 pm. Under the artistic direction of Clyde Alafiju Morgan and musical director Khalid Abdul N’Faly Saleem, the group of student dancers and drummers will share explorations of African music and dance with members of the CITIZEN U program — a program through the Cornell Cooperative Extension that focuses on civic engagement, college and career readiness, and personal development for Rochester youth between 14 – 18 years of age. The group is sponsored by the nationally renowned Department of Dance at The College at Brockport.
Morgan explains that the word Sankofa means “there is no going forward without looking back. Without our history – African, Caribbean, even American — we would have no idea how we got to where we are today, or how we can move on to a better tomorrow.” This concept of looking to the past while anticipating the future will aid in guiding Rochester youth towards bright futures.
