BROCKPORT, NY—The College at Brockport’s Auxiliary Service Corporation (BASC) made the holiday season a little brighter Dec. 18. Christmas came early for residents at Beikirch Nursing Home, thanks to BASC’s inaugural community service event “Presents for Residents.”
Betty Drennen, an executive administrative assistant, spearheaded the effort for BASC. Drennen worked closely with Beikirch staff to identify a Christmas wish list for each of its 113 residents. The response from BASC employees, Drennen says, was overwhelming. Approximately 150 employees, including student workers, participated. A team of nearly 20 employees—festively dressed in Santa hats—visited Beikirch to hand deliver the gifts, which included sweaters, puzzles, note card sets, and more. Each resident was presented with items from their wish list and a carnation.
“I was fabulously impressed,” Drennen said. “There was just genuine joy from our employees in giving back. We had a couple of our employees who just broke down and cried because they were so overwhelmed by giving the gifts to the residents. It was outstanding to see.”
BASC is a not-for-profit organization that provides key services to The College at Brockport. Services include dining, bookstore, parking, transportation, conferences, events, laundry, ID cards, etc. BASC is an integral part of the campus community with its core mission to support the strategic initiatives of the College.
