BROCKPORT, NY—A world-renowned poet, writer, commentator, activist and educator is coming to The College at Brockport, State University of New York, on Feb. 4 to deliver the College’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Lecture.
“An Evening with Nikki Giovanni” takes place at 7 pm in the Seymour College Union ballroom. A book signing will be held following Giovanni’s talk. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Giovanni is an outspoken civil rights advocate who insists on presenting the truth as she sees it. Her focus is on how individuals possess the power to make a difference in their lives, and most importantly, in the lives of others.
Giovanni’s autobiography, Gemini, was a finalist for the National Book Award. Love Poems, Blues: For All the Changes, Quilting the Black-Eyed Pea, Acolytes, and Hip Hop Speaks to Children: A Celebration of Poetry with a Beat were all honored with NAACP Image Awards. Her children’s book, Rosa, about Rosa Parks became a Caldecott Honors Book and reached No. 3 on The New York Times bestseller list.
Giovanni is also a University Distinguished Professor at Virginia Tech.
