BROCKPORT, N.Y.— The College at Brockport, State University of New York, today announced that President John Halstead has appointed Mary Ellen Zuckerman, PhD, as the College’s new Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. The newly named chief academic officer will begin on July 1, 2014, moving most recently from her role as Dean of Business at Ithaca College where she also serves as a Professor of Business.
In addition, this is a return to SUNY for Dr. Zuckerman, who was Dean of Business from 1999-2008 at SUNY Geneseo, where she also held the prestigious title of Distinguished Service Professor. Prior to her professorship, she was Associate and Assistant Professor at Geneseo, specializing in marketing and organizational behavior.
The new Provost will succeed Dr. Anne Huot, who left Brockport to become President at Keene State College in New Hampshire. During the current academic year, Dr. Douglas Scheidt has stepped in ably to serve as Interim Provost.
“I’m delighted to be joining The College at Brockport community of students, faculty and staff,” said Zuckerman. “I’ve been very impressed with all that I’ve learned about the excellence and diversity of the Brockport education and the strong focus on student engagement. That student focus, a core of the College’s strategic plan, is one of the main reasons I was attracted to the institution and is one that I fully embrace.
“The commitment to public education that Brockport embodies is another key aspect of the College that I value. I look forward to continuing the conversations I’ve begun with the individuals who already welcomed me so warmly to the Brockport campus and to meeting others from the community.”
Dr. Zuckerman has authored or co-authored three books and has published more than 25 articles in peer-reviewed journals. She has also presented papers or appeared at more than two dozen conferences.
“Following a very competitive, comprehensive and inclusive national search in which we cast the net widely, I could not be more pleased to have Dr. Zuckerman join my executive team,” said President Halstead. “This accomplished Dean combines all of the requisite qualities of a consummate academician, combining experience as both a Dean and Distinguished Professor who understands the faculty culture. At the same time, she will bring her entrepreneurial talents and knowledge of the Rochester area where she has a home. She is skilled in strategic, budget and academic planning and will bring refreshing, energetic, positive leadership to the division and College-wide.”
Dr. Zuckerman earned her MBA and PhD from Columbia University, the latter degree in History. Her undergraduate degree is in History from Simmons College, located in Boston.
