BROCKPORT, N.Y.—The College at Brockport, State University of New York, is joining colleges and universities nation-wide in an attempt to create more sustainable communities. For the fifth time since 2010, Brockport is participating in Recyclemania, a competition that promotes waste reduction activities and raises recycling awareness to campus communities.
Each week between February 2 and March 29, colleges will weigh the amount of recycled material and submit their totals to the Recyclemania competition. This year, Brockport is competing in the Stephen K. Gaski Per Capita Classic, which is focused on collecting the largest combined amount of paper, cardboard and bottles and cans on a per person basis.
In an effort to increase social responsibility, Brockport students will be able to make a pledge to recycle. The athletic department at Brockport will also be offering opportunities to join in on the cause. Attendees of the men’s and women’s basketball games will be able to make a pledge and compete in half time competitions dedicated to recycling.
Recylemania was founded in 2001 and has grown to include 407 schools in this year’s competition. Recyclemania is operated by Keep America Beatutiful, Waste Wise and College & University Recycling Coalition.
