BROCKPORT, NY—Some of Monroe County’s future teachers will descend upon The College at Brockport, State University of New York, on March 20. Brockport is hosting the annual Careers in Education conference, formerly known as “Think About Teaching.”
The mission of Careers in Education is to bring together college-bound high school students from various groups that are underrepresented in the teaching profession for a day of workshops, speakers, and other activities. The day, which begins at 8:45 am and ends at 1 pm, is designed to interest these students in pursuing careers as educators.
Monroe Community College Health and Physical Education Department Professor Melany Silas will deliver the conference’s keynote address. Silas is the founder and CEO of MJS Productions, LLC, a production company committed to producing original and classical pieces of art by African American artists. She was one of four women to be selected 2012 Woman of the Year by the City of Rochester’s Black Heritage Commission. The keynote address takes place at 9:15 am in Room 100 of Edwards Hall.
Other sessions at the conference include presentations by administrators, journalists, and award-winning teachers—all spanning the breadth and depth of the many careers that are available to students in the world of education.
