Brockport on Verge of Capturing SUNY Mascot Championship

Ellsworth the Golden Eagle advances to championship round of the 44 mascot tournament

BROCKPORT, NY—Syracuse University may have been bounced early from the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament—but that doesn’t mean Western New York no longer has a rooting interest in bracket-related “Madness.”

Ellsworth the Golden Eagle, The College at Brockport, State University of New York’s mascot, has emerged from a field of 44 to earn a chance to win the SUNY Mascot Madness 2014 Tournament. Ellsworth has defeated mascots from five other SUNY schools, most recently SUNY New Paltz in the tournament’s “Final Four,” to advance to the finals against Binghamton University’s Baxter.

Fans are asked to vote for their favorite mascot, with the most popular mascots advancing to the next round. A new component to the voting was introduced in the Final Four, as fans could also begin to support their mascots through tweets and Facebook shares. That social voting component allowed Ellsworth to stage a late comeback and nip New Paltz’s “Hugo”—the tournament’s defending champion—by less than one percentage point.

“We are overwhelmed by the amount of support Ellsworth has received over the last few weeks—through both traditional voting and social media engagement,” says Dave Tyler, Brockport’s social and digital media manager. “This tournament has been a great way for our community, and the Greater Rochester community, to come together and show Golden Eagle pride.”

The finals began at noon on April 1 and conclude at noon on April 3. Fans can vote online.

Watch Ellsworth train for this year’s Tournament.
