Leading Business Executive, Renowned Artist to Speak at Brockport Commencement

Brockport to celebrate Commencement during three ceremonies May 16-17

BROCKPORT, NY—Two accomplished individuals with strong ties to The College at Brockport, State University of New York, will return to campus May 16-17 to inspire the newest class of Brockport graduates.

Joe Doody, vice chairman of Staples, Inc., will deliver the undergraduate address on May 17. Doody leads Staples’ strategic reinvention and has responsibility for strategic planning and business development as well as the company’s operations in Australia, New Zealand, and high-growth markets. Doody, a Batavia native, graduated from Brockport in 1974 with a degree in economics. He currently serves as Chair of the Brockport Foundation and Co-Chairs the College’s $25 million fundraising campaign Pursue Something Greater: The Campaign for Brockport.

Thomas Markusen, an internationally renowned fine craft artist who served as a Professor of Art at the College for 30 years, will address students at the graduate ceremony on May 16. Markusen’s work has been exhibited all over the world, appearing in prestigious places such as the Vatican Museum, the White House Collection of Contemporary Crafts, and the Museum of Contemporary Crafts. In addition to his service at Brockport, where he remains a Professor Emeritus, Markusen has instructed workshops and lectured at universities, colleges, craft schools, and art galleries across North America. He will be receiving an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from the State University of New York during the ceremony.

Markusen graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1966 with a BS and MS in art.

“I can’t think of two better individuals to address The College at Brockport’s Class of 2014 than Joe Doody and Tom Markusen,” said Brockport President John R. Halstead, PhD. “Both have achieved incredible success in their respective fields, business and the arts. Both have made a lasting, positive impact here at the College and in their communities. They are tremendous role models for our graduates as they prepare to embark on the next phase of their lives.”

The graduate ceremony will take place at 5 pm on May 16 in the College’s Special Events and Recreation Center (SERC). Brockport will celebrate two undergraduate ceremonies on May 17 in SERC. Students from the Schools of Health and Human Performance and Science and Mathematics will graduate at 9:30 am. Students from the Schools of the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; Business Administration and Economics; and Education and Human Services will graduate at 2 pm.
